Vietnamese CUISINE “exploded” in the US


According to the Food Institute Magazine, the United States has become the “hot spot” of Vietnamese cuisine. There are nearly 8000 Vietnamese restaurants in many states of the country.

The Banh mi are considered quintessential food in America. Another menu item of Vietnamese origin, pho, is also gaining popularity in the US. 

In general, Vietnamese dishes on the menu are attracting attention in the country’s cuisine. 

“Vietnamese food like a ship can contain many different influences, which makes the cuisine recognizable,” Tu David Phu, a former Top Chef contestant, told The Food Institute. 

“There are many cross-cultural points in Vietnamese culture so Vietnamese dishes have developed in many aspects of different identities,” he added.

According to Tanner Food Group and SIAL America, the United States has become a “hot spot” for Vietnamese cuisine, with nearly 8000 Vietnamese restaurants in each state.

In the 2023 Popular Food Forecast, the American National Restaurant Association identified Southeast Asian cuisine (including Vietnamese, Singapore, and Philippine cuisine) as its leading global trend.

Michael Merdy, food scientist, and founder of the cooking website Say: “Especially the increasing popularity of Vietnamese cuisine is related to the diversity of flavors and textures. The combination of sour, sweet, salty, and spicy flavors, as well as the use of green and aromatic vegetables, makes Vietnamese cuisine particularly attractive to everyone”.

In the past few years, I have seen a significant influx of Vietnamese food into the United States, “said Amy Marks McGee of Trendincite. The epidemic provides an opportunity for restaurants to offer bold international dishes, such as Vietnamese cuisine, as many customers are increasingly craving unique flavors that are not available in their lockers. Therefore, emerging Vietnamese restaurants that feature driving thus have gained momentum, such as the bustle of Saigon in Houston.

Saigon Hustle opened along Texas’ Gulf Coast in February 2022 and quickly received a $1 million investment from the Savory Fund. Restaurant owners say they feel the drive-thru model tends to make eating strange food becomes less “scary” for Americans. 

The main dish sold in Saigon Hustle is the Banh mi. The Banh mi is always an interesting dish, featuring extremely fresh ingredients like coriander, lemongrass, carrots, and chili peppers, along with fish sauce, and tender pork sometimes for as little as $6. 

The reason the banh mi to be accepted in the US: “It tastes both familiar and a little different,” says Tu David Phu. “Pho and banh mi are classics of Vietnamese cuisine, but I firmly believe that dishes like vermicelli, vermicelli, and banh chung are growing exponentially in popularity.”
